Anaerobic Metabolism during Activity in Amphibians

چکیده

1. Total lactate production (anaerobic energetic generation) during maximal activity was measured in eight species of amphibians. 2. Slow-moving animals, exemplified by Bufo boreas, produce small amounts of lactate and do not exhaust. In contrast, fast-moving, saltatory forms, such as Rana pipiens and Batrachoseps attenuatzls, have high levels of lactate generation and are unable to sustain maximal activity. 3. Aquatic species rely on air gulping during activity and show little anaerobiosis. 4. The temperature dependence of anaerobic energy generation is high (Q,, = 1.5-3-9) for all species. 5. Levels of amphibian lactate production are lower than those of lizards and show greater interspecific variation. 6. The rate of lactate production is directly correlated with predator avoidance. Noxious-tasting or aggressive amphibians have low anaerobic scopes; others rely on anaerobiosis for energy for rapid flight. Rapid activity in amphibians appears possible only at the expense of extensive anaerobiosis.

The effects of the combination of bioplastic and its degrading bacteria (Genus Acidovorax) on the metabolic activity of anaerobic bacteria in Siberian sturgeon (Acipenser baerii) fingerlings hindgut by using CLPP

Community Level Physiological Profiles (CLPP) is novel method to evaluate microbial activity and diversity in ecosystems. According to the previous findings, poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) as a bio-control product, increases bacterial diversity in some aquatic animals. In this study, the effects of four experimental diets (control, combination of two PHB degrading bacteria, 2% PHB, bacteria+ 2% P...

Patterns of Metabolic Recovery from Exercise in Amphibians and Reptiles

The physiological responses of amphibians and reptiles undergoing vigorous exercise are qualitatively similar to those of other vertebrates. Oxygen consumption increases rapidly to rates that are threeto 10-fold the rates at rest. The aerobic response to graded exercise in locomoting reptiles and amphibians is for the most part linear. Oxygen transport by the cardiovascular system during exerci...

Effects of magnesium supplementation on the central and peripheral fatigue indices of active individuals following an anaerobic activity

Introduction: In this study we investigated the effect of magnesium supplementation on central and peripheral fatigue indices in active individuals following a period of anaerobic activity. Materials and Methods: In this way, 16 male university students have voluntarily participated in this semi-experimental study. The subjects were randomly divided into 2 groups, supplementation and placebo. I...

Apnoea in Amphibians and Reptiles

1. The amphibian ancestor had two gas exchangers, one working in water and one in air. It also ventilated the aerial exchanger in an intermittent fashion. The functional repercussions of thie ancestry can be seen in all amphibians and reptiles. 2. During periods of apnoea, which almost all amphibians and reptiles show in their breathing patterns, there are variable fluctuations in lung and arte...
